about cleanerNYC
Cleaner neighborhoods start with shared responsibility
CleanerNYC is a growing community initiative with a simple goal: to help make New York City cleaner, one neighborhood at a time.
We believe lasting change comes from combining effective city services with education, responsible everyday habits, and active participation from the people who live, work, learn, and do business here.
Why cleanerNYC?
CleanerNYC began with a simple observation: New Yorkers care deeply about their neighborhoods, yet litter, overflowing waste, and poorly maintained public spaces can too easily become accepted as part of everyday city life.
The project was founded in Brooklyn by François Wiss, a longtime New York City resident and local parent who has lived in the neighborhood for more than twenty years.
CleanerNYC grew from the belief that cleaner streets cannot depend on any one group alone. City agencies have an essential role to play, but schools, businesses, residents, and community organizations can also help shape the habits and culture of the neighborhoods we share.
The goal is not to place blame. It is to encourage participation and make caring for our public spaces a more natural part of everyday life.
Our Mission
Our mission is to help build a culture of shared responsibility for the streets and public spaces we all use.
CleanerNYC brings together education, local businesses, and community involvement to encourage better everyday habits and a stronger sense of responsibility for our surroundings.
By making people more aware of the impact of their choices—and recognizing those who are already doing their part—we hope to make cleaner streets not just an expectation, but something we all help create.
